HARESH SAYS: We need to secure our stadiums

Image
As published in Malay Mail today. HARESH SAYS By Haresh Deol   THEY gathered at the Stade de France, eager to see two world class football teams in action. France hosted Germany in an international friendly in Paris last Friday, as 80,000 fans chanted, took selfies and cheered for their favourite players in action. But the smiles quickly turned into panic, and for some, tears. Those at the stands, including French President Francois Hollande, were jolted following terror attacks that hit various parts of the French capital. They later learnt one of the three bombs set off near the arena was supposed to be detonated inside the stadium. Authorities said an explosion at the terrace would have triggered a deadly stampede. The death toll of 129 could have increased to thousands. Bodies would be seen all over the field as some of the best footballers in the world would have also been killed. Those in the stadium have one man to thank — an unidentified security personnel. Secu...

Illegal guards everywhere! Send right teachers for right courses; Man keeps dead wife for 35 days

In what is best described as a major oversight, the nation’s security industry is left to the devices of “illegals”. Fresh from the shooting incident where an Indonesian security guard shot AmBank officer Norazita Abu Talib at the branch in Jalan USJ Sentral 2, Subang Jaya, before running away with RM450,000 from the vault, findings by The Malay Mail revealed: ● Security guards in residential areas, condominiums, high-rise buildings, financial institutions and factories in and around the country are mostly Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indians, Burmese and Indonesians. For the record, only Malaysians, Nepali ex-servicemen and Gurkhas are allowed to work as security guards in the country. ● Rogue security companies will "franchise" their services to a third party. ● An acute shortage of armed guards forces companies to arm their men despite not obtaining the required licences. ● Those securing security services do not conduct background checks on the company. ● Security ...

Rogue guards - a 20-year-old problem

Have you ever wondered about the nationality of the security guard at your condominium? Did you know that only Nepalese ex-servicemen and Gurkhas are permitted to be security guards in Malaysia? Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Afghanis are strictly off the list. Surprised? It was reported last year that more than 150,000 locals and 50,000 Nepalese Gurkhas were legitimately employed as guards in the country. With demands for security guards increasing and the availability of cheap labour, unscrupulous firms are taking advantage of the situation, often hoodwinking their customers to believe they are being supplied legitimate security personnel. Even the Security Services Association of Malaysia had, since 2006, acknowledged it was possible for guards to be hired without referring to any authority and it was difficult to detect them. The Malay Mail had in 1990, 1992 and again in 2006 reported how easy it was for anyone to be a security guard as our reporters were able to secure jobs...

Barca fiasco: This is not another Kollywood flick

"Take my number down. We can meet outside. I’m not scared.” That was not a scene from the famous gangster Tamil movie 'Pudhupettai' nor was it a conversation overheard outside a pub. Those were the words of a security personnel manning the VIP lift entrance at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday. Mr Moustache, who spewed such rudeness, went on to push fans and members of the Press into an already packed small lobby area at the ground floor. His colleague, a scrawny young chap who folded up his short sleeved T-shirt presumably to show off his minute tattoo on his upper arm, joined in to mock fans and members of the Press. KLFA president Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz witnessed it first hand. The former Setiawangsa MP, who is also the FA of Malaysia (FAM) referee committee chairman, had to raise his voice against the security detail before he was allowed out. Clearly frustrated, he described the whole episode as “stupid”. Read all about the Barca saga in Haresh Says today. Her...
