As published in Sunday Mail By Vijhay Vick vijhayvick@mmail.com.my PETALING JAYA — Sports officials, athletes and observers have lambasted Selangor for adopting the #KitaLawan motto for next year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma). The motto, revealed during a briefing with state sports associations at De Palma Hotel in Ampang on Friday, is the tagline used by jailed opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters who are fighting for his release. The Sukma motto has the words Selangor peneraju kecemerlangan sukan (Selangor spearheading sports excellence) above an eagle’s head and #KitaLawan! below. The meeting was organised by the Selangor Sports Council and chaired by state executive councillor for sports, Amirudin Shari. Amirudin insisted the tagline was “not an issue”. Sukma is the national games participated by athletes aged 21 and below. The 2016 edition is in Sarawak. “It is a tagline associated with resistance. Sukma is a sporting event for the young. Anwar made "rookie mistake"

Image
As published in Malay Mail today  Palace officials are unimpressed with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after he had written a letter seeking a meeting between his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The palace rejected the request, further denting Pakatan Rakyat’s plans of replacing Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim with Dr Wan Azizah as the Mentri Besar. “It is as though someone ill-advised him (Anwar) on the purpose. We seriously cannot believe he made that mistake. Protokol pun tak faham (He doesn’t even understand protocol),” the source close to the palace said. “With regards to the letter, it’s as though Anwar doesn’t want to meet Tuanku but must show he is trying to do so. But he knows he can’t be meeting Tuanku by making such a rookie mistake.” The Selangor palace received the letter on Sunday. Sultan Sharafuddin’s private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, said in a press statement yesterday the sultan had declined to me...

Have our politicians converted the fence-sitters?

Image
US President Barack Obama's successful campaign online saw him reelected for the second term last year.   The well-thought strategy by his online team was honoured at the Annual Webby Awards presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences on Tuesday. Malaysians will go to the polls tomorrow in what has been dubbed the social media general election as there are more than 13 million active Facebook users and over a million Twitter accounts in the country. Millions resort to information on YouTube instead of television. This has led to political parties advertising on various online platforms, from YouTube and Yahoo! to even Dictionary.com. Several of our politicians, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and PKR’s de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, are certifi ed Twitter "addicts" as their accounts have been verified and acknowledged by Twitter.  The other politicians active o...

Mere talk, Anwar?

Image
UPDATE April 6, 2013 (12.20am): Mere talk indeed as Anwar will defend Permatang Pauh after all, as reported in The Malay Mail . ---------- “Perhaps, it is just a signal or a strategy employed by Anwar (Ibrahim) to confuse our rivals. They tend to get overly excited whenever Anwar makes an announcement." Those were the words of PKR's Penang Youth Wing leader and PRK's Permatang Pauh Youth Wing leader Amir Ghazali. Throughout my conversation with Amir yesterday he mentioned "Kalau benar..." three times - referring to Anwar's plan of contesting in Perak. The PKR de factor leader is expected to make an announcement as to where he will contest during a 'ceramah' in Permatang Pauh tonight. Amir admitted Anwar's loyal supporters are slighted over the news. Read the sentiments of the folks in Permatang Pauh in The Malay Mail today. HD says: Hmm....
