Former footballers charged with offering bribes to fix match

TWO former footballers were charged in the Sessions Court in Seremban this morning with two counts of offering bribes to two Malaysian Indian Sports Council-Malaysian Indian Football Association (MISC-MIFA) players involving RM20,000. National player Khairul Anuar Baharum, 43, and Public Bank player S G. Prem Kumar, 49, claimed trial to both charges. On the first charge, they are accused of offering RM10,000 to MIFA goal keeper Mohd Khairul Izzuwan Shaari to fix the outcome of the match, 0-2, between MISC-MIFA and Perak State Development Corporation on April 7, this year. On the second charge, they are accused of offering RM10,000 to MIFA player S.Harivarman for the same purpose. They allegedly committed the offences at Jalan Andalas 1, Senawang Light Industry Area in Seremban between 9pm and 10pm on March 27. Footballers were helpless against bookies, says ex-player

The footballer, who revealed all to Sunday Mail on condition of anonymity, described his season with the city side as a “nightmare”. Nicknamed Tom Boy, the 49-year-old Prem Kumar from Sentul was detained on Thursday and remanded on Friday for six days over allegations of match-fixing. This was following the arrests of three Malaysian Indian Sports Council-Malaysian Indian FA (MISC-MIFA) footballers for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices. Victorian County Court sentenced Malaysian Segaran “Gerry” Subramaniam, 46, to three years in prison, with two years suspended after he pleaded guilty to one count of conduct corrupting the betting outcome of  Victorian Premier League football matches. Segaran, who has already served 222 days, will be eligible for release in approximately 5 months, at which point he will be deported to Malaysia. The court heard Segaran, who had played soccer semi-professionally and worked as an air conditioning technician and clown in Malaysia and New Zealand, had been recruited by a more senior member of the syndicate, known as “Jason”, through soccer circles in Malaysia.  Read more here . Semua pemain, pegawai pasukan dan pemain import yang terlibat dalam Liga Malaysia diwajibkan untuk mengisytiharkan harta masing-masing berkuatkuasa mulai musim depan. Setiausaha Agung Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Hamidin Mohd. Amin berkata, langkah tersebut perlu sebagai usaha untuk mengekang gejala mengatur perlawanan yang kembali menular dalam liga tempatan. Baca laporan penuh di sini . Ini merupakan satu langkah proaktif dari FAM untuk membendung gejala bookie yang berleluasa sejak zaman 90-an lagi. Singapura dan beberapa negara yang lain juga mengamalkan proses yang sama buat pegawai dan pemain bola sepak mereka. Apa yang penting sekarang adalah untuk memastikan bahawa peraturan ini diamalkan oleh pihak-pihak yang berkenaan.
