'Malaysians are talented but not strong enough'

Image
“Some players from Terengganu are going to enjoy stints in Europe...either England, Portugal or Holland.” Those were the words of T-Team coach Peter Butler ( pic ). This came about after the author contacted Butler just before appearing on Nadi Arena on Saturday regarding former SC Beira-Mar player Nazmi Faiz Mansor. SC Beira-Mar had, in an email, revealed that “ In the next season we will bring one or two players from Malaysia, who will be chosen by Peter Butler.” “Who told you?” was Butler’s first response when asked over the contents of the email by the Portugal club. “Look, clubs from England, Portugal...they call me all the time asking about talents in the country. “Honestly, the Malaysian players are a talented lot but talent alone is not enough to survive in Europe. They are still not strong enough and it will take some time before Malaysian players make it abroad,” he added. Nazmi Faiz Mansor courted controversy on and off the field with his su...

Exclusive: More Malaysians to play for SC Beira-Mar

Image
More Malaysian players to see action with SC Beira-Mar? That seems to be so after the author obtained confirmation from the club that they are working closely with T-Team coach Peter Butler to bring "one or two players" to play for the Portugal club next season. In an email to the author, SC Beira-Mar's Department of Communication representative Luis Viega said; "Regarding your questions about Nazmi Faiz (Mansor), initially we agreed a concession for six months, but then he asked to stay in Malaysia for personal reasons.  "Focus on what matters to us is that we remain very committed to help develop football in Malaysia and now we are working in contact with Peter Butler. In the next season we will bring one or two players from Malaysia, who will be chosen by Peter Butler." The email was in response to queries about Nazmi Faiz leaving the club despite it was earlier reported on the club's website that he will be released for only "six mon...

Nazmi has to wait till April

So what will youngster Nazmi Faiz Mansor do between now and April? Not being able to play competitively will certainly affect the performance of a professional player - and it remains to be seen if Nazmi will be at his best when he will be able to play for PKNS during the second transfer window. That aside, there now seems to be some form of 'sympathy' for the former Harimau Muda A player. Having left Portugal outfit SC Beira-Mar, Nazmi's reasoning of walking off and flying across the Indian Ocean back to Kuala Lumpur was simply due to the fact that the club "is facing financial woes". Really? If so, why didn't the agent try and pitch Nazmi to play for another Portugal side? Is it a situation where they were not impressed with Nazmi? Or Nazmi was itching to return? Also if indeed the club was facing "financial woes", why didn't Nazmi - or through his agent - file a complaint with UEFA (if they were not paid their wages that is) and re...

Nazmi sah ke PKNS

Image
UPDATE 5.45pm: Nazmi: I'm not going back to Europe. ------------- Mengapa Nazmi Faiz Mansor? Mengapa meninggalkan kelab Portugal SC Biera-Mar tanpa memberitahu sesiapa? Mengapa PKNS? HD kata: Oh well...

Di mana Nazmi Faiz Mansor?

Image

Academic v sports

Image
Nazmi Faiz Mansor missed his SPM examinations yet again as he is currently plying his trade in Portugal. This is the second time Nazmi missed the crucial examination as he was involved with the Sea Games last year. His efforts were not wasted as the national Tigers went on to defend their gold medal in Jakarta. Naturally, many questioned to why Nazmi missed the examinations. Living in an academic-centric society, many believe Nazmi should have sat for his papers - just like what Nicol David did and she passed with flying colours. There are others who stress that Nazmi should be allow to pursue his career in Portugal and that it is alright to sideline his books temporarily. Perhaps Nazmi can get pointers from a 55-year-old grandmother who is currently sitting from the examinations in Kedah as reported here . Now this brings us back to the role played by sports schools in the country. Sports schools in Malaysia are governed by the Education Ministry and they are to adhere to ...

National footballers face dilemma in sports school

Image
What is a sports school? A. To churn out student athletes, OR B. To churn out students who are active in sports Education is VERY important. Period. But let's look at the situation faced by two Bukit Jalil Sports School footballers Raphi Azizan Mariappen and Muhd Ariff Farhan Md Isa. There are efforts to get both footballers to stay in Wisma FAM - in a bid for them to further gel with their team mates. Apparently the school is not too keen with the idea and insists they stay at the hostel in Bukit Jalil. It was also learnt the school was not "cool" with the fact Nazmi Faiz Mansor skipped his SPM for national duties. One does not blame the school as they are regulated by the Education Ministry and are forced to adhere to the regulations set by the Ministry which is similar to that of any other SMK. This includes obtaining a "healthy" number of passing rates and good attendance. So where do we draw the line? This has been a subject of discussi...

Nazmi's Portugal stint

We've had a long tradition of players playing abroad. Goalkeeper Chow Chee Keong started playing in Hong Kong in the late 60s. He earned the nickname Asian Stainless Steel Gate and Crazy Sword. Lim Teong Kim played for German club Hertha BSC Berlin in the late 80s. He is now the assistant coach of the Bayern Munich Under-19 team. We had the likes of Akmal Rizal Rakhli who played in France, Stanley Bernard Samuel who played in India and Safee Sali - who has made millions from wages and endorsement while playing in Indonesia. Last week Tam Sheang Tsung become the first player below 20 to be promoted to the first team of Shanghai Shenhua Football Club. The latest to join the cast of players enjoying contracts abroad is youngster Nazmi Faiz Mansor . Nazmi has successfully secured a three-year contract with Portuguese top flight football club Beira-Mar. It has certainly got many people excited- from those retweeting the news on Twitter, some even did not credit the source...

Back to school for Nazmi

Image
Nazmi Faiz Mansor raised eyebrows and won the hearts of many especially throughout the Jakarta Sea Games last year. He also skipped his SPM examinations for national duty, and the team defended their Sea Games gold medal. But coach Ong Kim Swee is not about to cut him any slack. Kim Swee set up a meeting with Nazmi's father Mansor Mustafa, Bukit Jalil Sports School principal Marina Chin and several Education Ministry officials to ensure Nazmi is prepared for the SPM examinations this year. It's back to school for Nazmi, as reported in today's Mailsport . HD says: Kena beli bekas pensel baru, buku baru, stokin baru....... all the best lad!

Blame game?

Image
Let's study the two situations below. Situation A Got this comment for my earlier posting The Games Begin about our shooters in Indonesia without their ammunition . It read; man, am surprised no journalist wrote about the aminution fiasco other then just report as a news item. ocm has been sending teams for umpteen years and by now should know the requirements to bring live aminution. who did not do his job? will msn pay again? what nonsence. 1. Should the National Sports Council be held responsible as they seem to be in control over everything when it comes to the local sporting scene? Is it fair for the Council to foot the bill? 2. Should the Olympic Council of Malaysia be solely blamed as the Sea Games is a multi-sports event which comes under its ambit? Shouldn't they have sorted all this out? OR 3. Should the national association take the rap for failing to get such matters finalised before flying off to Indonesia? Haven't we competed abroad, Indonesia included, be...
