Bahrain v Malaysia

Image
The last time both teams met - they managed a 1-1 draw at the Shah Alam Stadium. Tonight, Bahrain have home advantage as the middle eastern team host Malaysia in Manama for the 2015 Asian Cup qualifier (kick off 10.45pm, live on Astro Arena 801). Bahrain coach Anthony Hudson is quite confident of securing wins in their match against the Malaysian Tigers followed by Yemen four days later en route to qualifying for the tournament in Australia. I'm not concerned; I know what we're doing and how hard everyone is working," Hudson said. "We have a good group of players. They train seriously and our team improves every single game. I full expect us to do well and improve even further in our next two games, which will mean we will qualify this month, as reported by Gulf Daily News . Goal.com said "With this game possibly his (national coach K.Rajagobal) last with Malaysia..." while Berita Harian reported: Di atas kertas mungkin tidak kerana k...

KJ and football - dribbling on popularity?

Image
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has a keen interest in football. Having headed the now defunct football outfit UPB-MyTeam before joining the FA of Malaysia (FAM) as deputy president for a term in the past, he has been rather vocal about Malaysian football since becoming a minister. Anyone criticising FAM will surely win the hearts of many fans. Khairy has done that well. He seems to even have the support of Johor FA president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Kelantan FA president Annuar Musa. But Khairy has also received the wrath from others. Singer Siti Nurhaliza chided Khairy for telling former national football team captain Jamal Nasir to stay out of his dealings with FAM - as reported in The Star . FAM have agreed to meet Khairy soon, as revealed by the national body's general secretary Hamidin Amin in a Bernama report. Nevertheless, Malaysian sports is not all about football. And for Khairy to take football - and only football - to task seems rather...

Erosion of responsibility

I also wonder why did it take so long for action to be taken after the landslide at the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve on May 7 ? We have not seen any construction of reinforced concrete wall or soil nailing. In fact, the blue torn plastic sheets have been the only protection for the past six months.   Apparently KL City Hall will only now start remedial works as it is the rainy season.   It has been raining almost every night and soil erosion is bound to happen.   All I can do is to pray that I will not be alerted of a landslide resulting in the deaths of many as I go to bed at the end of the day. Read all about landslides, soil erosion and my hatred towards those torn and worn out blue plastic sheets on hill slopes in Haresh Says, as published in The Malay Mail today. Song villagers sing the right tune

Image
We often hear of communities whining and complaining about the lack of maintenance of facilities constructed by the government. But not the folks at Rumah Richard Nanga Beguang in Song, Sarawak. A small village located some 50km from Kapit and 130km from Sibu, the locals began living in the area in the late 1940s. It was regarded as the first settlement along Beguang River. As the area started to progress, the government saw it fit to include a sporting facility right in front of the longhouse. In 2010, a futsal court was constructed under the Gelanggang Futsal 1Malaysia project, which was ready just before the Hari Gawai (Harvest Festival) celebration. However, a major flood swamped the village in August the same year, leaving the court covered with mud. The villagers did not whine, complain or demanded for assistance from any party. Armed with brooms, shovels and other tools, they got together and cleaned the area. They called it gotong-royong — a word alien for city...

What if Astro pulls the plug...

Image
Most Malaysians suffer from withdrawal symptoms when football takes a break from June to mid-August yearly. Some go through pain as if the spice of their life has gone missing. They struggle to look for something else to do, especially over the weekends. Most mamak eateries report a drop in customers as well.   Imagine this scenario being repeated each month and there is no football over television, week in and week out — no staying awake or getting up in the wee hours of the morning to watch football on weekdays.   Strange as it may sound, this imaginary scenario could well be a reality should Astro decide to pull the plug on showing football due to the escalating costs of bidding for matches to be telecast over the satellite network.   Astro is increasing their subscription rates for the sports package by RM6 per month from Nov 24 and this may not go down well with sports fans. Read Astro's justification - from the price hike, bad reception and repeated...
