Candidate vs party

Image
"I will meet Tan (Seng Giaw) to get acquainted with his contacts and grassroots."  Those were the words of two-term Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng who will be contesting in Kepong in the 14th General Elections, as reported by The Star . His DAP colleague Hannah Yeoh, who is Subang Jaya assemblyman, will contest in Segambut. Winning the Kepong seat will make Hannah an MP - elevating her political standing. Her response to the switch, as seen in The Star article: “It’s an urban area, so there are similar concerns about safety, infrastructure, and quality of education,” she said, adding that the constituents knew their rights, have critical thinking and want access to right information. And here's what a Segambut resident had to say: "It's come to a point where I no longer care who contests , Hannah or the BN candidate. Because I know Segambut is messed up due to over-development and these people won't do anything." It is without doubt the l...

Karpal Singh dies in road accident

Image
He would have turned 74 on June 28. But it was not meant to be as prominent politician and lawyer Karpal Singh s/o Ram Singh passed away in a road accident at KM306.1 of the North South Expressway near Gua Tempurung, Perak at about 1.10am. His long-time assistant Michael Cornelius Selvam Vellu, who was in the Toyota Alphard also died, while Karpal's son Ramkarpal and the driver were injured. Nicknamed the Tiger of Jelutong, Karpal, who was born in George Town, graduated with a law degree from the National University of Singapore. His political career began in 1970 when he joined DAP. Four years later he won a seat in the Kedah State Legislative Assembly. He was then elected to Parliament in 1978 (Jelutong, Penang) and held the seat for more than 20 years. Karpal was detained, along with several other opposition leaders, under the Internal Security Act during Ops Lalang in 1987 for "inciting racial tension". He was released for several hours in 1988 but rearre...

Illegal guards everywhere! Send right teachers for right courses; Man keeps dead wife for 35 days

In what is best described as a major oversight, the nation’s security industry is left to the devices of “illegals”. Fresh from the shooting incident where an Indonesian security guard shot AmBank officer Norazita Abu Talib at the branch in Jalan USJ Sentral 2, Subang Jaya, before running away with RM450,000 from the vault, findings by The Malay Mail revealed: ● Security guards in residential areas, condominiums, high-rise buildings, financial institutions and factories in and around the country are mostly Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indians, Burmese and Indonesians. For the record, only Malaysians, Nepali ex-servicemen and Gurkhas are allowed to work as security guards in the country. ● Rogue security companies will "franchise" their services to a third party. ● An acute shortage of armed guards forces companies to arm their men despite not obtaining the required licences. ● Those securing security services do not conduct background checks on the company. ● Security ...

DAP wants RoS take investigate MCA

Image
UPDATE Sept 24 :  Former MCA deputy president Lim Ah Lek says the humiliation is unbearable, adding may God bless MCA . RoS, meanwhile, has initiated investigations into MCA as reported here . ----- The DAP has challenged the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to investigate the MCA following The Malay Mail's expose of six questionable members in the Taman Tasik Jaya branch in Negri Sembilan. DAP Taman Segambut branch chairman Yew Jia Haur lodged a report with RoS on Wednesday following the paper’s front page article "Phantoms spook MCA again" on Tuesday. Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said the move was necessary to ensure the RoS was fair when it came to taking action against political parties. “RoS took action against the DAP based on stuff written by a so-called Father Augustus Chen, a person who none of us know about. We now want the RoS to investigate MCA based on what was published by a major newspaper,” said Lim. “RoS will now have to show to the public...

1 school system 4 all Malaysians

Image
Wishful thinking? Maybe not. Or perhaps this should have been implemented right from the start. There has been plenty of talk about the need to have a single stream education system instead of the very many vernacular schools in the country. The author, has numerous times in the past, maintained the nation needs a single education system but, with the workings of certain vernacular schools, allowing students to master four different languages - Bahasa Melayu, English, Mandarin and Tamil. This will also allow students to mix fluidly with one another. But not many would agree to such an idea - including those political parties who claim of being Malaysian but yet would fight for the rights of vernacular schools which will only contradict their 'Malaysian' stand. Tamil schools and Sekolah Agama are often in the losing end, for they are always deemed to be the poorest. Chinese schools, meanwhile, are placed in the opposite end where an enrollment fee - in the form of...

Tunku Zain clears the air

Press release by Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin ibni Tuanku Muhriz regarding statements by Tunku Aziz and Anthony Loke.     I will be writing about the statement by Tunku Abdul Aziz bin Tunku Ibrahim and the response by Anthony Loke Siew Fook more fully in my usual column on Friday but for now I emphasise the following:   1.       It is unfortunate that private discussions have been made public.  Political parties should be able to freely engage any Malaysian citizen to discuss confidential proposals within the boundaries of the law.  I am grateful to Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, for his tweet: “klu x terima, kita senyap jer. Hormatilah privasinya. Mcm meminang x jadi, x perlu heboh.” 2.       However, now that this has been brought to the public domain, I can confirm that the descriptions of the contents of my conversation with the DAP some months ago are broadly accurate.  A...
