Bukit Bandaraya residents’ association president Datuk Mumtaz Ali said issues highlighted by the media were problems that affected the community. “The attack against Malay Mail should not have occurred as the paper has always been the voice of the people throughout the years,” said Mumtaz. “We take our grouses to the media because certain quarters do not adhere to rules and guidelines, or when the authorities fail to act.” He said the attack against the media was also an attack on the community. “We speak on behalf of the people and if the media is being attacked for highlighting such matters, it can also be viewed as an attack against the people,” he said. Longtime readers of The Malay Mail will remember this paper’s special connection to RTM’s World Cup telecasts. On June 14, 1982, an insurance agent named PETER TEO phoned Hotline with a suggestion that RTM allow the public to contribute RM1 each to pay for more ‘live’ World Cup telecasts. Like millions of other Malaysians, TEO had just watched RTM’s ‘live’ telecast of the World Cup 1982 opening match in the wee hours of Sunday, June 13, in which defending champion Argentina was upset 0-1 by Belgium. RTM began ‘live’ telecasts of the World Cup from 1974, and continued this in 1978 and 1982, but up to that time soccer fans here could only expect ‘live’ telecasts of the opening match, the two semi-finals, and the finals, and would have to settle for radio and TV news announcements of the results of almost all the other matches. THE  iconic image of Dataran Merdeka has been marred as no proper monitoring and maintenance work has been carried out by the authorities. On Tuesday,  The Hotline  Roving Team spotted several items from the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2013 — mainly rolls of carpets, race route signages and banners — scattered in the area. The road race, which was held on Sept 29, attracted more than 30,000 runners. Checks revealed that the field was clearly damaged — a far cry from its heyday of hosting sporting events in the 40s and 50s. Read more in the Hotline section of The Malay Mail today. (Click on picture for earlier article). ----- The Malay Mail bagged another two awards after Frankie D'Cruz bagged the National Press Club's Scomi Journalist of The Year Award while The Malay Mail also won the award for DRB Hicom Best Media Organisation (Community Service) for its Hotline section. This was reported on the website today. Congratulations to Frankie for he derserves it. Also, it is hope that the award for the "Hotline" section, which is surprsingly missing from the newspaper in recent times, will be re-introduced in the near future. I believe it is also right to congratulate Frankie for being the new Editor-in-Chief of the Malay Mail.
