He would have turned 74 on June 28. But it was not meant to be as prominent politician and lawyer Karpal Singh s/o Ram Singh passed away in a road accident at KM306.1 of the North South Expressway near Gua Tempurung, Perak at about 1.10am. His long-time assistant Michael Cornelius Selvam Vellu, who was in the Toyota Alphard also died, while Karpal's son Ramkarpal and the driver were injured. Nicknamed the Tiger of Jelutong, Karpal, who was born in George Town, graduated with a law degree from the National University of Singapore. His political career began in 1970 when he joined DAP. Four years later he won a seat in the Kedah State Legislative Assembly. He was then elected to Parliament in 1978 (Jelutong, Penang) and held the seat for more than 20 years. Tan Pek Wan , The Malay Mail's trusted computer 'wizard' for over a dozen years, died yesterday (at 5.03pm) at the University Malaya Medical Centre after a long illness. She was 62. A popular figure on the editorial floor, Pek Wan, as she was popularly known, was greatly sought after by everyone who ran into problems with their computers. Pek Wan roamed the editorial floor with an air of authority and ability to quick-fix the system almost every time the computers crashed. She came out of retirement from the New Straits Times in Balai Berita, Jalan Riong in Bangsar, in 2008 to serve The Malay Mail when it was relaunched in 2009. She brought to The Malay Mail 40 years of experience, having started as an accounts clerk until her retirement as systems assistant manager in 2007. He survived a car crash. He even survived a court case. Sadly this morning, the former national hurdles star Ishtiaq Mubarak ( pic ) passed away in his house right after having breakfast. He was 65.   During his colourful career on the tracks, he won the silver medal in the 1974 Asian Games. He was also the silver medalist in the 1973 and 1975 Asian Track and Field Championships. He went on to coach the young hurdlers, hoping to mold turn them into better Ishtiaq. With a bandana on his head, the hippie looking, rock loving Ishtiaq will always speak about his 'easy-rider' days and how he was not a big fan of superbikes. He faced plenty of challenges in life. He survived a near-fatal car crash in 1970 which left him bed-ridden for nine months.Yet, he went on to be one of the finest athletes the country has even seen. He was known to be extremely critical over the national team. He was there at almost every Malaysia Open, often spending time speaking to members of the Press. That's Eddy Choong ( pic ). Sadly, the four time All-England champion drew his last breath at a hospital in George Town, Penang yesterday evening (3pm). He was 82. Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek offered his condolences, saying it was a big loss to the nation.
