What about Malaysian solidarity?

Image
Why did BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Nadzmi Salleh ( pic ) back out from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) presidency race - a role he was eager to take on in the first place? Is it wise for Nadzmi to be part of the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC) which seems to be in a mess with a legal suit and an injuction filed by the Lebanon Badminton Federation? Shouldn't Nadzmi spend the same time an energy on BAM - to impart his knowledge as former Proton boss? Nadzmi and his Indonesian counterpart Justian Suhandinata, who is also running for the BWF presidency, claim Nadzmi's decision to back out of BWF was done based on "Asian solidarity". For the record, Nadzmi had earlier provided and explanation for his decision of taking up the BAC top post as published on BAM's website . What about Malaysian solidarity? Why not Al Amin?

Image
That is the question that begs for an answer. The Badminton Asia Confederation held an Extra Ordinary Meeting and passed a vote of no confidence against its president Katsuto Momiiof Japan. The Thailand BA proposed BA of Malaysia president Nadzmi Salleh as the acting president instead - and this was well received by the members. Question: Since it is only 'acting president', why not give it to one of the many vice presidents? If they seek for a Malaysian representative, why not BAM vice president who is also BAC vice president Al Amin Majid? Doesn't Nadzmi already have enough on his plate? Read more in today's The Malay Mail . HD says: It feels good to be back.

Wrong move Nadzmi

Image
I respect BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Nadzmi Salleh ( pic ) and his council members. I sincerely do. However, respect does not mean I have to agree with what they say and do all the time. I may respect a certain office bearer but I will still say that he has done nothing for the development of sport in his state. I'm sure there are many within the badminton fraternity who can attest to that. So when the registration of the nominees for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) presidency closed on Feb 22, I was not amused to see Nadzmi's name. Nadzmi, however, is confident of nailing the top post despite the three corner race between Indonesia's Justian Suhandinata and former Olympian Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, as revealed by NST's KM Boopathy . To be fair, there are those who claim it is important to have a figure within the world body - to make life 'easier' for Malaysia in the international front. Nevertheless, I am a strong believer that one should be...

Nadzmi eyeing BWF post

Image
"This is my last term with BAM as president and the executive council (exco) members have urged me to go for it. I have agreed." Those were the words of Nadzmi Salleh ( pic ) as reported here . It is important to have some form of representation within the world body. However, should Nadzmi eye for the job? With all due respect, Nadzmi has got bigger issues to deal with at home. For starters, the nation is certainly heading toward Indonesia's direction as to the serious lacking of talents. The country continues to pin its hopes on world No 1 Lee Chong Wei - but for how long? Also, the nagging issue of players from clubs not given the due respect they deserve. While the BA of Malaysia may say otherwise, the presumption still lingers that club players are continued to be sidelined. Nevertheless, we now have the Sports Minister handing out money to a particular club and to quickly add that other clubs also deserve funding by the ministry. Good recognition but who ...

KKK-TBH stay; BAM scouting for Project Manager

BA of Malaysia president Nadzmi Salleh spoke to the Media after the Exco meeting yesterday. Here are two points taken from an 18:05s video clip from Satwant Singh’s blog . Point 1 “We deliberated at length, about Koo (Kien Keat) and Tan (Boon Heong)..you know there are a lot of opinion about this pair…this pair has approached us. They would like us to consider giving them the last chance for the World Championships next year. We deliberated that at length and we finally decided…of course I don’t want to tell you what went on in the discussion but we finally decided we give them the last chance because this is what they want and we will make it very clear to them that this is the last chance for them but despite of that we will also expose them to other partners in the lesser tournaments.  If they can’t make it by the time of the World Championships or don’t perform well, we have other partners to partner them. The target for them must be very clear and the exco r...

Sud...

Who should replace Nadzmi?

Image
Well isn’t that what those in the badminton scene are talking about? Let’s not kid each other. Almost everyone, from those who used to be part of the fraternity, observers and those within the stable, are demanding for the removal of BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Nadzmi Salleh. Perhaps they think they can do a better job. Or perhaps they are not fascinated with the fact that Nadzmi had, throughout his tenure, obtained big bucks for the national body and with badminton having secured two silver medals in two consecutive Olympics (Beijing 2008 & London 2012). Then again, perhaps Nadzmi was lucky to have a gem like Lee Chong Wei. And the fact is the sponsors are attracted to the sport simply due to Chong Wei’s achievements and impressive track record. In fact, why should Nazdmi quit ? And if he did, who would then best replace him? Of course many may say the obvious candidates are Nadzmi’s deputies - Al Amin Majid and Tengku Kamil Ismail Tengku Idris Shah . Mokhzani Ma...

Should I stay or should I go?

UPDATE  Aug 10, 10.15am : Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Malaysians should not point fingers and blame sports associations if athletes failed to deliver. He said that everyone involved should take responsibility including himself. Read more in today's NST . At least Shabery is man enough to shoulder the responsibility. ------ Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president Naim Mohamad ( pic) clarified that he was giving up his Track Cycling Development Committee chairman and not the deputy president's post. This was flashed by Bernama today . This contradict earlier reports of him supposedly quitting the deputy president's post as seen here . There are apparently efforts to get BA of Malaysia (BAM) president Nadzmi Salleh to quit the hot seat. However, such talks have been on-going for several months now. Those who defend Nadzmi will say at least during his tenure the sport has netted two Olympic silver medals (2008 & 2012). ...

Should Nadzmi go?

Image
Typically after any shortcomings or failure, the easy way out is by demanding the head of the chief running the show. Some self-proclaimed leaders are better off being mere sidekicks. But what about the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM)? Let's not kid ourselves as we all knew from the beginning that the national team will struggle in this year's Thomas Cup. And now even the chances of winning the elusive gold medal at the Olympics is slowly fading away. The question that everyone seems to ask right now is if BAM president Nadzmi Salleh ( pic ) should quit. After all, Nadzmi who first joined BAM believed in the Japanese way of life when it comes to accountability and transparency. In short, he believes if one cannot deliever, one should go. BAM deputy president Al-Amin Majid seems to be the likely candidate to take over. Even former Bernama editor-in-chief Azman Ujang took a swipe at Nadzmi in his column 'What now after Wuhan' published in The Sun several...

What ails our shuttlers?

Image
I remember speaking to National Sports Institute's director general Dr Ramlan Aziz ( pic ) about the possibility of him penning down his thoughts in a regular column in The Malay Mail some time ago. Ramlan had approached other establishments as well and I believe he felt the New Straits Times would be a better platform for him to air his views. Perhaps he was right as it is a nation-wide daily after all. In yesterday's column, Ramlan wrote about our national shuttlers - mainly Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong. Read What ails our shuttlers? The BA of Malaysia, meanwhile, admitted better plans and programmes are needed for the national shuttlers. BAM president Nadzmi Salleh was quoted as saying; “It is not about blaming anyone. In BAM, we do not blame anyone but we find ways to overcome problems and to provide solutions so that we can achieve better results. It is the same way in business too." Read more here . HD says: Let history guide us to sha...
