Athletes 'politicised'.

This led Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang to attack BMF over Twitter. He said: “Foreign-based Bruno Manser Fund should not interfere [with] how Malaysians reward their national hero at Olympic. Please mind your own business.”

The following was taken from Free Malaysia Today as seen here.

The bronze medal winner was conferred the Johan Bintang Kenyalang award by the state government yesterday.

Athletes turned into political tools?

Let's revisit several instances that happened not too long ago.

Remember when Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong paraded around Ijok during the by-elections in 2007 right after winning the All-England championships?

One year ago, the time when Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat won the All England Open Badminton Championships gold medal, it was also “coincidently” the time for the Ijok by-election. Through a “timely” arrangement, they turned up in Ijok to share their joy with the voters.

And then we had the Datuk-ship tussle between DAP led Penang and the BN-led Malacca. Penang awarded national top shuttler Lee Chong Wei the title after returning from the Beijing Olympic with a silver medal.

Chong Wei's long time coach Misbun Sidek was later awarded the same title by the Malacca government.

Successful athletes ought to be rewarded but hopefully they will not be used to score political mileage along the way.

HD says: Credit ought to be given when deserved.
