Pahang PAS tells govt to phase out gambling; mati lah MSN!
This was taken from page 30 of Berjaya Sports Toto 2020 Annual Report:
Sports Toto views sports development as a key element in nation-building and fostering national unity. Since its inception in 1983, Sports Toto has contributed substantial annual contributions to the National Sports Council, playing a pivotal role in helping the nation to groom sports’ talents over the past 37 years.
Fact 1: Sports Toto is a gaming and lottery company.
Fact 2: It contributes between RM30 million and RM40 million to the National Sports Council (NSC or better known as MSN) annually.
Today, PAS Pahang was reported as saying that the federal government should not be supportive of gambling "tauke" or companies, regardless of the tax contributions from the industry.
Here are two paragraphs from the article:
[Paragraph 8] NSC has been receiving funding from Berjaya Sports Toto for years and the money is used for administrative matters and day-to-day operations, among others. The contribution is over and above the annual allocation NSC receives through the Youth and Sports Ministry.
[Last paragraph] Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang) had, during the committee stage debate of Budget 2019 at Dewan Rakyat yesterday, mooted the separation of sin tax from the consolidated fund to ensure only money obtained through halal means is used to pay the wages of civil servants.
A dear friend, who is involved in grassroots politics, said PAS must say such things to justify its political existence.
But I do hope PAS will come up with several solutions that can substitute lottery funding to NSC.
Perhaps PAS can offer NSC some money from logging activities in Kelantan?
Otherwise, mati lah MSN, mana nak cari duit??!
